The Irrometer operates on the tensiometer principle and has been the industry leader since 1952. The Irrometer consists of a sealed water-filled tube equipped with a special vacuum gauge adn with a porous tip that is installed in the ground at desired root zone depths. When the soil is dry, water is drawn out of the instrument, which is registered on the gauge. When irrigation occurs, the vacuum draws water from the soil back into the instrument. The Irrometer, in effect , is a dummy root.

Subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) uses permanently or temporarily buried dripperline or drip tape located at or below the plant roots. It is becoming popular for row crop irrigation, especially in areas where water supplies are limited or recycled water is used for irrigation. Careful study of all the relevant factors like land topography, soil, water, crop and agro-climatic conditions are needed to determine the most suitable drip irrigation system and components to be used in a specific installation.
